Ivan The Terrible

Physically my largest screen print project so far, it was done as a final creative project for the Conceptual Cinema of Sergei Eisenstein class lead by professor Siarhei Biareishyk during my time in University of Pennsylvania. When I saw Part II of the Ivan the Terrible movie by Eisenstein, I was astonished by it. Most captivating for me was the only colored scene of the dance. I decided that I wanted to do the poster for this film, but this time an actual printed by hand one, with the size of 22 by 30 in. Here I’ll show how this poster came alive through screen print.

Process

The artwork and negatives were done in procreate. My largest screen could only fit half of the image, so I had to cut it in half and print separately.

Portrait of Ivan was derived from the actor himself, Nikolay Cherkasov, but stylized in more Eisenstein way. I studied a bunch of his drawings to capture his way of depicting characters in my own vision.

The art style for the golden frame was drawn from old Slavic iconography. This motif was chosen because of deification of the Ivan The Terrible figure.

The typography was done in InDesign. Font for tittle corresponds with the era of the Ivan The Terrible himself, while all information is done in soviet style fonts.
